I don't want to imply this could happen to you, but I hope the WY DMV is better at recording VIN #s than Alaska.

In August I bought a 50 B2PW from a guy who wrote me a receipt saying it was abandoned on his property 40 years ago and he didn't have a title. I went to the DMV, got a surety bond through my insurance company, and got my title.

Two weeks ago, he sent me an email saying he hoped I hadn't done much work on it because the original owner came back looking for the truck and wanted it back. He said he would give me what I invested in it. I told him No, I had my title and it was mine.

He said the other guy had a title and a state trooper was now involved and said if he didn't get the truck back he would be arrested. Sounded like a scam to me so I went to my local troopers and they said it also sounded like a scam, but they suggested I call the detachment where this started. Guess what...yes, it was all true. The previous owner did have a title.

To make a long story short, the trooper said the other owner could sue me in court to get it back and he would arrest the seller and then have to drive 4.5 hours to where I have the truck and trailer it back; he didn't want to do that. Told him I felt this was between the previous owner and seller and I was the innocent victim. He agreed, but since there we two titles, it would have to be settled in court.

After two weeks of this crap and the last owner saying he had a $5,000 offer for the truck, the seller and previous owner finally agreed that the seller would pay him $3,000; I paid $1,000 for it.

So, good luck with your issue but you might want to check if the dealer had another title assigned saying it was an abandoned vehicle. You don't want to add this to your already massive headache.
