Almost 20 years ago I ran across a semi-defunct resort in California where the owner, who was in his 70s, believed he knew the secret to living forever (or at least a long time) via various sorts of health practices that I didn't really understand. The place was a failure financially, and the taxes and upkeep were high, but instead of selling out straight up, he sold a 99-year lease on the place to some new operators and fully believed that when the lease was up, he'd get it back. I'd say that was optimism. Of course it was also California.
