Rust coverters or covering

I have never used a rust converter or covering, but would like to give my truck one good once over before I get too old to care or put forth the effort. After years of reading and hearing testimonials of different such products I'm sure this is what I want done to my frame and other drivetrain components that it would work on.
What I'd like is an opinion, positive or negative about my plan to sandblast anything I plan to put a rust converter on,then allow it to develope a coat of fine surface rust for the converter to adhere to and convert for a protective coating.I would then fill in any sizable or noticable pits with a filler before I applied a second coat.
Would this be a reasonable method and would it be reasonable to try this on the tranny, transfer case, axles, and even driveshafts ? If its as hard and durable as described, it seems like a good overall covering as I wanted everything black anyway.
