I have built two pole barn style machine sheds each 24X48 as well as a good size horse barn with a hay loft.
For the horse barn, because of the height and hay loft weight, the plans called for a hole 3 foot diameter by 4 foot deep, filled with concrete after first pouring a 1 foot thick footer.
But the machine sheds were one story without an upstairs or loft, and I think the holes were about the size you mention. I am not a building engineer but if it was me I would stick with the plans. Those plans were probably designed with the idea that there could be high winds on occasion or other factors where strength might come in handy.
I hired a guy with an old telephone auger truck to dig my holes and then erect the poles. Then I used in essence large scale batter boards to hold them plumb for the concrete.
BTW the poles I used were free. I called my local electric utility and they had a stockpile of several "old" poles that were pulled when higher poles were erected. They were all in good shape and helped me with the overall cost a lot. Your utility might have a similar situation.
