Bill, having bought a 78 dodge 4x4 new, I thought about doing it myself way back when. in order to make this swap, and do it right, which I assume you want to do. the transfer case has to be changed, and the front diff. there used to be kits to change the transfer case over to part time but was pricey even thirty years ago, and didn't do anything to address the front diff.(no lock-outs) the whole thing is a major undertaking and should be thought out carfully. and now for what you really want to know, gas milage, if you do this and do it right, you will realize a whopping one mile to the gallon!! it will cost no small amount of money, and the gain will not be worth the money, compared to what will be lost from the truck as far as ability and safty. when I was driving mine I expermented w/ different combos, front drive, rear drive, and all drive, all drive wins, front drive second, rear drive third. think about it hard Bill, I still want my 78 back, it was the most capable truck I have owned until the ff came along. Dave.
