We had some pics of one VERY similar to that. They were putting field tile on the homeplace in the early 1900's. It WAS a steam shovel and interesting as the stradle the ditch. Back of machine had a storage area where tile were and they also pulled a trailer that was full of them on our place.

2 years ago we redid a 3/4 mile long waterway and hired a local guy to come in with his new trencher. Thing had a 400HP, Cummins and Computer controlled depth to give consitant fall. Punch in you depth numbers and Pinpoint GPS start and stop and enjoy the ride. Dug, Layed and buried tile all in one operation. Took about 4 hours to go up and back. 6 inch on one side 10 on the other. Said it cost $500,000. It was pretty impressive to watch and the you didn't want to be too close when it came across a rock as it would throw a basketball size one pretty fast. Earplugs definitely required!

Chain was driven by 2 HUGE hydraulic motors. Said they use hydraulic in case they hit somethoing big it will stall the chain instead of breaking something. Kevin
