Here is a picture of the back of a 1946-50 (well technically up to the first 600 or so of 1951 production as well) speedometer.
If the center that the plastic disk mounts to is missing, and you have a bad odometer you may be better off buying another speedometer for parts, or just buying one already built.
The center that holds the plastic disk is press fit onto a thin metal shaft that comes out of the mechanism, and if that shaft is broken you need another mechanism, or another shaft. There are at least 4 different shaft assemblies, and some are super hard to replace.
I find that most of the odometers I pull have peeling paint on at least one number per wheel. This means the whole odometer ends up being useless unless you want to turn the numbers so the best ones face out, which I do not do as they obviously would come up at some point.
