There isn't any other sender to match the three wire gauge. So changing the gauge would permit the use of a one-wire sender, but you would need to find one that is 0-to-85 ohms, Chevy uses 270-0. Maybe there is an after market one that fits the chevy tank?

The voltage reducer for 12 to 6 is easy, about $8.
