When I resurrected my '48 and ran it on unleaded gas with that wonderful RFG ethanol crap for the first time in 50 years, I too went through several inline filters within a couple of weeks. (Including under the hood with no flashlight at night 30 miles from nowhere.) I couldn't believe there could be that much accumulated crud in the gas lines. I even had my gas tank out and fashioned a new bottom panel for it. ! I even blew the lines out with air. (Don't spark it and make a flame thrower out of the other end... :(
Since then, there hasn't been a spec of crud in the sediment bowl of the fuel pump.

I agree, sounds like rust to me. The neat thing about rust is that if you drain and dry your tank, and as it is a fine powder, you can likely just blow 90% of the dust out. Same with the lines.

Try it, but keep a couple of those $4 NAPA inline filters in the glove box for a while just to be sure you ain't stranded somewhere. Still have one in my glove box. If the postage wasn't as much as the filter, I'd send it to ya. Pull your carb top in a couple of months and look for rust powder. It's often so fine it will go through average fuel filters.
