I agree & disagree!
Epoxy heavy in zinc is definitely the best coating if all you're concerned with is durability. A marine epoxy is ideal. No primer needed & in fact most marine epoxy adheres even better if there is a blum of rust. That said, it's definitely not a show finish.
As for powder coating...you're wrong. Good powder coat is incredibly durable. There's several different kinds...epoxy, polyester, etc. A good powder coater is difficult to find. Look for the shop doing huge runs of lawn furniture etc...then don't go there! :)
There's a great shop on Mitchell Island called Quality Coatings...you should try them next time you have a set of wheels or something that takes lots of abuse.
Consider this...every Harley Davidson built now is Powder Coated...including tanks & fenders. I think virtually all motorcycles are.
