I had a 318 in my Bumblebee. It was a wonderful engine, ran strong and was reasonable in fuel use. From the state highway to my house, I climb 1800 feet up a back road with lots of turns and steady climbing. The 318 would bring my PW all the way home in 4th gear, never lugging, let off in the corners and punch it and you were climbing and gaining speed, it ran great.

But with that said, in no way, in my opinion, can the 318 compare to the Cummins
4B series diesels in our Power Wagons/WC's and M37's.

I use 4BTA ( Turbo Aftercooled) engines, CPL 857. CPL stands for 'Control Parts List'. This describes what parts make up that engine and its performance rating. There are many different 4BTA engines, both in Horse Power and Torque. On CPL 857 engines, the idle speed is 800 RPMs. I generate full 302 Foot Pounds of Torque at 1700 RPM's, just 900 RPMs off Idle. And develope full 120 hp at 2500 RPMS which is governor limit. As a comparison, CPL 1260, which is also a 4BTA family, max torque is only 265 foot pounds at 1700 RPMs and horse power is 105 at 2500 RPM's. So you can see the differences in the family of 4BTA's. And there are many more variations in the 4BTA family. The 4BT family, without aftercooler drops in torque and hp.

I see fuel mileage at 25+ MPG around home. On a trip of 3411 miles, I had a overall average of 25.9115 MPG. I find my best RPM vs Fuel use is 1900 RPM's.
I can run 60 MPH at 1950 RPMs with a slight drop on MPG. I am absolutely sold on diesel power in our trucks.

If you locate a Cummins 4B series and need more info, email me the CPL number found on the data plate, front left side of the timing gear cover. I will give you all the info direct from the Cummins CPL Sheets.
