While I admire your Dodge work, that farm labor excuse has been around for many years and false from day one.
CA and many farm states have migrant worker programs that allow temporary work visas that supply cheap, unskilled, seasonal labor.
The problems the farmers are having is not a closed border, is the competition by other labor trades in construction etc, that pay their illegals a few dollars a day more.
The false argument from Bush and others that there are jobs American won't do is a tremendous disservice to those of us who work with our hands, did these jobs before business owners got greedy and build the America that is here now.
Illegal labor didn't build this country, Americans did. Immigrants that were legal did, hard working neighbors did and we still do.
Tell me how much that tomato costs when you add the cost of overcrowded schools, closed hospitals, over burdened infrastructure and a lost heritage.
I think that most of us would pay a little more to eat, studies have shown that if the farm wage was raised to the minimum wage or $10 per hour, a head of lettuce would go up about a dime.
As mentioned in other posts, farm costs and farm overhead are a VERY small percentage of the actual cost of food.
Besides..it would be good for our kids to get off of their butts, put down their Ipods and work a summer in the fields, we'd have very little complaining after that...= )
