a bigger concern in older engines from the southern U S is the fact that some people just put water in the engine with NO rust inhibitors... to help the stopping of scale build up... which is disastrous to a cooling system.... a quarter inch of hard water scale build up is equal to four inches of cast iron... so its important to maintain a cooling system with proper P H levels and a decent coolant that prevents this build up.... when hot spots occur in a block or head ... over heating is hard to trace i have seen people rush out by new cores... pull out thermostas... add larger fans when the problem is scale... tanking out the engine is the best solution to clean out the block and heads and i would recomend that before any rebuilding starts iys one less thing to come back and bite after you going
