Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. I assume the electric ones are better because they're made to run brake boosters too. I remember seeing somewhere where some of the old 1970s "land yacht" cars that had vacuum-powered everything (brakes, smog controls, heater/AC controls) had electric vacuum pumps. If so, and I can find out what to look for, there are probably still some in junkyards.

Thanks also for the suggestion of an alternate location for the vacuum tank. I hadn't thought of that. I don't mind if the performance isn't like a modern electric one. I just want the wipers to go back and forth on their own even on long hills.
