These filters are bypass filters, which means that only a small
percentage of the oil goes through the filter anyway. The rest
stays in the oil galleys and gets pushed throught the bearings
and back to the pan, or sump, if you're british. The small hole
apparently no problem. Enough oil flows through the filter where
it gets quite warm. At 40psi, a lot of oil can go through a 1/16"
hole.
