The spring was not snapped on to the poppet. It would idle at 1200, or 300, but not in between. My guess is that the valve stuck open, and would roar. Then it would get sucked shut, and idle down that time.

So I finally drove it up and down the local hill. Got her into 4th, and even downshifted the crash box. It shifted much easier once I figured out that 3/4 are spring loaded, and I stopped trying to upshift from 2nd to granny... it's been ten years since I drove a crash box, took a minute er two. Anybody need me to grind a pound of second?
