I have fought the fuel gremlins when I first put my WC12 on the road 10 years ago. I have been towed home more than once due to fuel system related problems.

My experience with the mechanical fuel pumps is that when they go bad, they generally leak out the weep hole on the left side of the fuel pump (side facing the oil pump). However, loose screws around the diaphram can also cause problems. The cork gasket around the fuel pump has also caused me grief (I buy some everytime I go to a military vehicle convention/rally).

If you can find the fuel system article written in Military Vehicles Magazine several years ago, it is a great resource. Steve Turchett (sp) basically stated that most of your fuel problems occur on the vaccuum side of the system, not the pressure side.

I generally use an empty can and the manual primer lever to determine if there is flow from the pump, by unhooking the fuel line at the carb. If there isn't flow or very little flow, then I start on the vaccum side. If I have good flow at the carb. inlet, then it is a carb. problem. I have found that the best tool to diagnose fuel system problems is a vacuum gauge. I start at the fuel pump and work backwards towards the tank. I have fished lots of trash out of the fuel line couplings and have had to replace suction side hoses in the past. I have had to clear out the pick up tube out of the tank, also.

I hope this helps you find your problem.

Dave
