A bad diaphram wil leak out the side, or into the crank case. A piece of crud under a valve will keep it from closing, losing presure and volume, with no outside signs. But I'd bet S Bear's problem is flooding doe to similar dirt under the needle/seat. He needs to shut off the fuel (pinch a hose with pliers or vise grips) and run it til it dies. Then open fuel supply, and crank til it runs. The inrush of fuel will wash the crud out from under the needle. The crap is usually a piece of fuel hose, from a raw tube end where someone cut a steel line to put in a filter. They usually use a hack saw and leave and end like a rasp. The raw steel slashes the inner of the rubber hose to bits.
