You can use Spiralocks. These are a flat wire lock that makes two turns around the diameter. This premise insures that there is no open end as on a typical clip.
You will need the diameter and width of the groove in the piston. Go to to your local bearing house to order them.
A word of caution....
Using round wire clips as most manufacturers do, have the piston pin retaining groove cut with the same radius as the wire diameter. Spiralocks work best with a straight cut groove for them to fit in.
