Are you sure you're thinking of the M35A2? All the A2s I've seen had Spicer 3053 5-speeds. The original M35 gassers had Spicer 3052 5-speeds. The 3053 has an overdrive and was installed when they converted the gassers to multifuel diesels. I don't know for sure what the M35A3s have in them, but I've heard they have all kinds of nifty upgrades like locking diffs and central tire inflation. They have some diesel-only commercial engine, not sure if it's Detroit or Cat or what, and maybe they did put an Allison automatic behind it. Some people say the 302M Hydramatic was really an early Allison, as if that makes it better, but it looks to me like exactly the same box that's in the 50s GMC cars, and it's just not up to the task it was put to.
