Is lead additive necessary?

The previous owner suggested it be used in my 58 with original 230, 34,000 miles. Since adding it to the last tank can't keep the truck idling without stalling out. Not sure if thats the problem but got me thinking if its really necessary or a waste of $$$$. Kevin
