Cats like to play with their food. That's not good if you're on the menu. Our cats get up to 250 lbs in NorCal, and it's all muscle, claws and teeth. Cats like to attack from behind, usually going for the base of the neck with their teeth while they pin the arms with their claws.

When I'm in the outdoors I always carry at least a good sized pistol. I walk a few hundred yards, then stop and turn around, and maybe walk a few paces back and throw a rock or two and make lots of noise. No, I can't see the cat, but it doesn't know that [if it's there]. I used this method some years ago 'cause I could feel something stalking me when I got stranded out in the deep. I walked for 12 hours, and finally got to people [yes, I got lost and walked in circles some]. The next day two hunters bagged a 220 pound male in exactly the same area...

Not long ago we had one down at the reservoir a mile away. Just layed in the grass watching my buddy, swishing its tail back and forth with its ears back! Saw it next day, sitting, and its head came up to the 3rd strand on a barbed wire fence. Big cat. It came up to the house that night and prowled around right outside the windows, screaming and growling. When challenged it would not run off, but hunch up catlike and snarl and scream. Hungry mean cat.

City slicker can rant and rave, but around here it can often be life and death, and for me, it ain't going to be either one of mine!
