linseed oil undercoating

I was reading a "truck for sale ad" on the TDR (Dodge diesels)website that mentioned that he had the vehicle ('92 Dodge W250 Diesel) undercoated with linseed oil.
I treat my handtools with the stuff (wood handles and metal parts) plus the wood stove etc, but never heard of undercoating with it. Is this an oldtimer's trick or something new? Does it work? How do you do it? The stuff is thick and needs to be handled safely. Anybody have tips or insight?
