Paul:

I am a little late in responding. I have a 327 V8 in my carryall with 4.89 gears. My comment is that I wish it was not so low geared at times. Even on the trail. I do have the 2 speed transfer case in it also. In low range 1st gear it is really a rock crawler and is not much good for anything else. I must admit that it has a SM 420 trans that has a 7.06 ratio for first gear.so my final ratio is about 68 to 1 in low range first gear. That is sufficient for 99% of any off road stuff. My real complaint is that on moderately rough roads (with a fair number of medium rocks) I would like to go just a little faster but the jump from 7.06 to 3.58 (second gear) is too big at times. Bottom line in my case the 5.83 gears would be just too low. THe V8 gives you all the power you will ever need.

My next major project is to put in an overdrive as it turns 3,000 RPM at 60 MPH and eats gas. I will put in a Ranger unit as I can use it in both 2WD and 4WD.
