The ideal for me would be something like this.

I believe that I have indirectly stated my option. I would keep the SM 420 transmissions just as is. I would also keep the 1.96 ratio in the transfer case. Sounds fishy since I stated that I was unhappy with it yesterday. OK here is the soloution. I would put a Ranger overdrive unit between the bell housing and transmission. It would be a 27% overdrive unit. Now look what happens to first gear.

1st low range(LR) no OD final ratio is 67 to 1
1st LR OD final ratio is 49
1st HR no OD final ratio is 35
1st HR OD Final ratio is 25

This would give me quite a range of ratios and therefor speeds to choose from. I am not a rock crawler so 67 to 1 is more that sufficient for the crawling that I will ever do.

Then on the upper end I will have reduced my RPM by 27% on the open road and the V8 has more that sufficient power and torque to take care of that even up hills. At 60 my RPM would go from about 2800 to 2056 which is a big difference. Traveling at 70 which I do on the open road my RPM would be about 2400.

I would end up with 12 forward gears I have not calculated all the possible overlap in ratios as yet.
