The spacer could be made from 1in aluminum, 4 bolt holes, and machined for the center bearing retainer, plus a locating collar on the front side. It depends on what kind of machinist is available locally. I'd go with a spacer, then next time you can use normal tranny parts.

Is your 540 an Overdrive? Find any extras?
