Tim - Just a thought. I don't know about the M37 shifting but the early PWs did not have sycromesh transmissions and were tricky to shift. You soon learned how. Remember that the M37 was built strickly as off road vehicle and won't go over 35 mph on highway and shouldn't. PWs will do 50 to 55 nicely if you want to get somewhere in decent time. At the Rally in past two years I have seen M37s in excellent condition for $4000 to $4500.
