Parts availability - A problem only at Wal-Mart. There are a number of military vehicle parts suppliers. Also, many 18 wheelers have 24 volt components.

Reliablity - You are removing components that are probably still working after more than 30 years.

Delco alternator - If you are making the change just so you can use a Delco alternator, have any competent alternator shop rewind the Delco 10S to 24v. The 10S has an internal regulator. Have them make it self energizing and you have only one wire to the ammeter and then to the battery terminal on your starter switch. I have 6v, 8v, 12v and 24v alternators (all self energizing)in my various trucks. They cost about the same as a 12v replacement alternator - at least here in Central Texas.
