If your carb. is flooding, you definately have carb. troubles. It sounds as if your floats have absorbed fuel and aren't floating. If they don't shut, they keep pumping fuel in and bingo, you're flooded.
A 6 volt generator won't charge a 12 volt system. You can usually get them to charge an 8 volt battery but not a 12. There are one wire alternators available that are supposed to be fairly easy to put on. I usually stay with what came on a vehicle as then you don't have to remember what all the parts came from when it comes time to replace them.
I like electric fuel pumps for a safety aspect. I add a cut off switch in the circuit so that in case of emergency, I can kill the pump and the fire or fuel leak will stop or at least be knocked down to the point of easy extinguishing. It's also nice to hide the switch so that the truck can't be driven without your permission. Just remember, you want an electric pump as close to the tank as possible as they are great at pushing fuel but don't pull very well.
