Most old canister filters filled from the outside to the middle where it drained from. A lot of the housings have a plug to drain the fliter housing befor pulling the filter out that way you get the junk and dirty oil out of the housing befor pulling the filter element out. So realy you would not drain all the oil out of the housing just sitting unless it was a real clean filter. Mark H.
