Rattling noise up front

No, not my teeth.

My 74 PW with 2bl 360 has a rattling noise coming
from somewhere in the front of the engine. Its like
somebody has dangled a nut on a string and is rattling it.
Also, it seems to come and go. Usually gone once the truck
has really warmed up. At first I
thought it was the power steering pump since it would
quit when I turned the wheel. Then I thought well maybe
the waterpump since we had a old John Deere make similiar
noises we couldn't figure out until the waterpump cratered.
I was resigned to waiting for something to go until
suddenly today it dawned on me, maybe
the timing chain is sloppy. Is this the most likely problem.
Also, driving in town at idle or just off idle, this thing
lurches a bit. Is this another symptom or just something
wrong with the carb.
If its the timing chain, can't afford
to pay the mechanic's shop rate so I'll have to attempt
this myself. Haynes manual seems fairly straight
forward. Any tricks to make it easier.
Any advice would help.
