I don't think switches or circuit breakers would be the problem.
Neither of these devices "care" about voltage. Circuit breakers, on the
other hand might be set for too high a current and therefore provide very
little protection. This is because a 6V bulb needs twice the current to give
the same output.
A switch designed for 6V would be happier under 12V because the lower current
because there would be less arcing accross the contacts.

The items which are sensitive to voltage are:
bulbs
coils
electronics (radios etc. - you'll have to replace that radar detector)
motors (although 6V starters can handle 12V)

The balast resistor might have to be replaced along with the ignition coil.

This burning smell might be coming from ancient, rotted insulation on the wires.
In other words, a short. Another possibility is poor contact in the bulb socket
causing arcing and heat.
