How to Decode your Dodge WDX-WM300 Engine Number

1946-1968 Dodge WDX-WM300 Power-Wagons all came from the factory with Flat Head Six engines.

1946-1960 Dodge WDX-WM300 Power-Wagons used the 230ci FH6, and 1961-1968 WM300s used the 251ci FH6.

Both of these engines have the ID number stamped in the same basic location, on a raised pad, on the driver’s side of the engine, about 3" back from the front of the block, just below the head. The Power-Wagon engine number tends to be stamped into the face of the pad on the side facing the inner fender. A replacement engine may have the engine number stamped on the side, or on the top of the pad depending on the engine and what it came from. Check the Flathead Six Engines Page for more information.
The pictures below are from a 230 engine in a 1951 or 1952 Dodge B-3-PW6-126 Power-Wagon:

The pad on a 251 is a little different in shape, but is still in the same basic location as the engine number on a 230.
The pictures below are from a 251 engine in a 1962 WM300 Power-Wagon:

Detailed Breakdown
T137- This is the Engineering code for 1946-1957 WDX to K6-W300 Power-Wagons. The engines in that era were labeled based on the trucks engineering code, so Power-Wagon engine numbers were prefixed with T137.
L6WM3
L 1958
6 6 Cyl
WM3 WM300
This is what the parts books show the W300M engine in the Power-Wagon was labeled in 1958, but Dodge did not seem to use this system of labeling.
L6D3
L 1958
6 6 Cyl
D3 D300
The parts books books show the number L6 D3 to be only for 230ci engines in 1 ton 2wd 1958 Dodge trucks, but this label is found on the engine in many models of light duty 2wd and 4wd Dodge trucks. Actual trucks show that for the most part Dodge stamped all of the engines of the same size with the same code, instead of labeling them differently for each model as was done in previous years.
L23 or L230
L 1958
23 230ci
230 230ci
Starting at some point in 1958 Dodge started labeling the 230s L23 or L230, L is for 1958 and 23 or 230 is for 230ci engine.
M6-W3M
M 1959
6 6 Cyl
W3M W300M
This is what the parts books show the W300M Power-Wagons engine number should be in 1959, but Dodge did not seem to use this system of labeling.
M23 or M230
M 1959
23 230ci
230 230ci
Dodge seems to have labeled all 230ci FH6s used in Dodge trucks in 1959 either M23 or M230.

Starting in 1960 Dodge decided to add some more info to the engine number, the month and day the engine was made.

These engines are supposed to have a sequential build number after the date, but this has not yet been shown on real trucks.

???? There is not yet any data about what Dodge did for real with the engine numbers when they changed numbering systems .

The T137 engine numbers are sequential from 1946 until 1957. The starting number is T137-1001 and should end around or after T137-108001.
Here are a few engine numbers from actual trucks to give an idea of what number would have been used in what year. This is only done for T137 motors, as the rest break down the year as part of the engine code.
