Regarding your statement "only the rear in stock" has me wondering if that refers to the rear axle or the rear shoe?
The front and rear axles use the same brake shoes, but in the past the shoes were not the same. One shoe used to have more brake material than the other, though I'm not sure that's the case anymore. I can't remember if the leading shoe (self energizing) or trailing shoe had more material. My guess is both shoes are the same now, and they just wear at different rates.
