I think they just didn't know any better ot thought they could save money with a press fit. Who Knows.
Remember the first chevy 265ci V8 came out for
The 1955 model year,then 283ci and the 327.
Some very early 327 engine were press fit,but starting showing there mistake as the RPM and Horse power starting increasing with the Fuelly.
In 63 or 64 I think they started drilling them.
I had a new 68 350HP solid lifter 327 in a Vette.
Was fun to drive.
