I have used SS screws and bolts through out my truck. Yes they will snap off easier, but I don't use them where strength is required. Grade 5 and grade 8 bolts are made for a reason. With sheet metal screws I use a drill bit that is about the size of the shank of the screw. That will leave plenty of metal for the threads to bite into. I rarely have any problems with number 8 or 10 screws. I have used down to number 4 to mount my data plates. I had one box of screws that were bad, but the hardware store had switched brands and they turned out to be inferior quality. They very quickly switched back and gave me a replacement box.
