Tim, I think you are on the right track to have them scan your original paint. I personally would not trust ANY of the modern paint codes that claim to cross to Seawolf Submarine Green. All of the formulas have changed over the years and so much of this information seems to have been lost with companies changing hand anyway.
However, the hoods are the first thing to change color due to heat from the engine, combined with being in the direct sunlight. I can't tell you of how many old pictures I have seen of relatively new Power-Wagons and the paint on the hood is already changing even though the rest of the truck looks good. I would not trust the underside of the hood either.
Do you have the original windshield wiper access covers? These probably never saw sunlight and were not subjected to sever heat. Also, they are much easier to carry into a paint supply business than carrying your hood.
