Just an idea - maybe do a ship-scale stencil pattern (just made that up, but I assume there is such a thing) and shoot it in flat grey on the tailgate (?).
Have you thought about getting it hand lettered? It would look classic I think. Paint will get beat up there but so will everything else. If that's interesting, let me know. My dad is retired but my brother kept at it. I don't have any examples of his truck lettering handy, but there's a pic at this link of a Curtis pusher tail he did for the museum:
