In that movie of the construction of the Alcan highway, there's some footage of men riveting a bridge together, and the way they do it, it looks easy. No hydraulic squeezer, either. One guy with something like a portable forge heats the rivets bright orange. He grabs them with tongs and tosses them about 20' to the the riveters who catch them, stick them in the holes, and quickly set them with an air hammer. Quicker than putting it together with bolts and nuts. Nothing to it.
