Before you dive head first into tearing your generator apart, I would suggest you read up on generators and regulators first. I found a great article on a antique tractor website, but there probably are equally good articles on this website or the Dodge Power Wagon website. There are several ways to check the generator while on the engine,and these information sources will tell you how.
I would check the condition of your brushes and armature, which can be done with the generator mounted. Brushes should make contact with the armature. If the armature isn't worn down to the mica, a simple polishing and cleaning of the armature may help.
I have found that most of my charging issues are from the voltage/current regulator and not the generator.
