I don't claim that modern engines gain a whole lot in efficiency by running at higher temperatures -- just that there is some slight theoretical advantage. Driving the condensation out of the oil might be a bigger advantage, and saving cooling system size and weight is also a good thing. Variable-speed electric cooling fans are a great improvement in that area, though at the risk of "one more thing to break".

The engine swap is probably on hold for the winter. I'm snowed out of my land for now, so there's no pressing need to keep working on it. I got the replacement engine buttoned up with the oil pan, tappet covers, timing cover, and head on it, and plenty of oil in the cylinders and all over the crank, so it should be okay for the winter in the back of my truck with tarps over it. Meanwhile I can pick the best water pump, starter, clutch, and bellhousing from the two (have to use the Plymouth distributor), and other accessories, get them cleaned and painted and ready to bolt on when we get a spell of sunny weather. Carburetor and alternator have to come from the old engine, and fuel pump from the new (except I lost the glass bowl). When the snow melts in the spring, I should be able to just take it over and drop it in. I guess the wrecker is stuck there for the winter at this point. Should have put a solar charger on the batteries. Once I get the starter on, I can check the compression in those two cylinders that had no compression, and see if my shade-tree valve grind was sufficient.

Meanwhile I'm onto my current winter project -- building an easy-to-carry 10-30 volt 15 amp adjustable gas powered battery charger.
