I have to cut mine by making a dummy short shaft, basically a plug, then drilling down the seam, then filing it square. Good enoyugh for low performance tools like drill presses, or the coakamaimie instruments I'm always dreaming up.

Carbide is sintered, so is oilite bronze. Could be anything, but only needs to be like steel in this use. Oil it, broach away.
