I believe a lot depends on where your wheeling. Here in the Northeast, in the forests are a lot of trees for deadmen. In the midwest areas, deadmen may be few and far apart.
You may have to base cable length accordingly. Also keep in mind most power is on the first layer of cable on the drum. Each additional layer of cable 'greatly' reduces pull power.
I believe in keeping the cable as short as you can.
