This is my first posting here so this may have been covered earlier. If you have an original intact electrical system you should find that the positive battery connection terminal is a tiny bit larger than the negative terminal. Years ago my uncle demonstrated how the ampmeter will work in reverse when the battery is in backwards. If you turn the headlights on with the engine shut off and the ampmeter reads to the + side it confirms the battery is wired up backwards.
