Hi Mark,

In my experience, if you've already got a stuck piston, and you start trying to drive the whole thing out, past any rust in the bore, the piston will hang up and then you drive harder and harder (bigger hammer, etc).
Most times, the piston top comes right out if you drive from the bottom with a small diameter bar or chisel.
Your idea of drilling holes, etc is better than brute force. I still believe the piston will come out easier in pieces than as a whole. The pins and pin bosses can remain with the rod and be dealt with later. Once the piston top is gone and a piece from the ring land is out, the piston will come out very easily.
