i stripped a'40 wrecker with winch behind cab. was driven via sprocket and chain from passengers side PTO. PTO shaft extended under the bed into a pillow block, sprocket and chain transmitted power from shaft to winch input sproket. winch was a braden similar to the bumper mount type, but mounting surfaces such that spool is above bed. if unable to find winch designed for application, you could mount front type winch on blocks. i,ve seen similar set-ups on other wreckers, flat beds, "crane trucks" and old road tractors. units i've seen on road tractors have been several times the size of a front mount winch. all these winches i've seen have been on ton and a half or bigger trucks.
