I have a M-43 with 230. I am not concerned with more umph as it does at low speed and RPMs what I need from this low geared vehicle
used mostly for offroad farm work.
I have a 1964 WM300 PW with 251 that out powers the smaller 230. The 251 would be a good or possibly, better choice for a pre-61
PW if you choose to keep a flathead in place.
There are more performance parts for the smaller 230 than the 251 for a obvious reason. Vintage PWs is a good starting point and source for 230 performance parts like dual carb intake, headers, perf.cam w/HD valve springs, forged pistons?,alum. head.
Other mods are the point&condenser conversion to a drop-in optical unit for the dist. which gives more accurate and hotter spark especially on cold mornings.Better oiling and filtration set-up. The use of an electric radiator fan and waterpump to reduce power loss. Having the head shaved for more compression and component balancing
will also add to increased hp,durability and longevity.
