That flathead sound is so nice and mellow it hardly needs a muffler. I wonder why that is? Do the valves open slower or is it that the spark plug isn't right over the piston so the gas burns slower? I used to have an old flathead Ford V-8 that had run a sawmill, but I sold it before I ever fired it up. I wish I had at least had a chance to see what it sounded like. Maybe it will get resurrected into a "hot rod lincoln" someday.

I like engines that have their own sound. The the straight 6 in what's left of a '52 Reo 6X6 has a nice mellow sound too, but definitely "bigger" than a 230. Going downhill the backfires sound like shotgun blasts. Another unique sound is the D4 cat, especially right when the pony motor sputters off and you just hear that slow old diesel chugging over at maybe 200 rpm. It's a good morning sound, like it's saying, "okay, we're going to do some work today".
