Engine Degreasers

With spring here I'm getting ready to do some cleanup on my 59 W200. One of the things that I'd like to do is clean up the engine. I've used some degreasers in the past with mixed results. I know that there is nothing that will take off the really thick stuff other than elbow grease, but does anyone have any good advice on a degreaser that really works? All advice and suggestions welcome!
