Since I wasn't interested in 100% originality, I went to NAPA and bought an aftermarket housing and spin on fuel filter, then fabbed a bracket and welded it to the frame next to the passenger side fender. The line from the pump is flexible and feeds the filter then another flex line goes to the carb. It works quite well and I have not had any junk get to the carb.
